Kenechukwu Ogbuagu Is Creating Addictive Board Games With Nigerian Stories

Founder of NIBCARD Games, Kenechukwu Ogbuagu is an Abuja-based board game designer and enthusiast, who creates addictive board games based on relatable Nigerian narratives.

Ogbuagu has been designing board games for over 3 years and recently organized what was dubbed by NTA, “the first African board games convention.”

Speaking with Konbini about what turned him into a board game enthusiast, Ogbuagu said:

“To be honest, I never considered a career in creating board games. Sure, I always loved playing them when I was younger, but it took a turn after I designed one for a friend.

The joy in his face was the turning point for me, I guess. It made me became aware of this beautiful world and I suddenly became obsessed with it.”

Also speaking about the Nigerian narratives in his games, Ogbuagu said:

“I literally see a story in all the games I have designed – well, most of them. For instance ‘OYA’ is a game inspired by the Lagos street life.

My other game, ‘SAFE JOURNI’, is inspired by every experience that comes with traveling by road in Nigeria – and a bunch of others like ‘LUKU LUKU’, my first published game.

What I’m most proud of is being able to tell Nigerian stories even on the board – and letting people write their own scripts in our stories by simply rolling a die.”

Ogbuagu is currently setting up a commercial website where people can order his board games, but for now you can reach him on Twitter.
